Cervical cancer or cervical cancer is the leading cancer in women. Around the world, nearly half a million women suffer from this disease and cause more than a quarter million of deaths.
According to figures released by the National Cancer Registry in 2003 it was the second common cancer after breast cancer and accounted for about 12% of the total incidence of cancer among women.
One of the main contributors to the formation of this cancer is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV ) especially types 16 and 18. Both types of this virus accounted for about 70 percent of cervical cancers caused by HPV. The rest are caused by other HPV types.
In general, although most HPV infections will heal itself but if it is repeated and continued it could cause a change in the tissue in the cervix, and some can cause the tissue to become cancerous. How a woman can be infected with the virus?
According to a study, HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease that most commonly occurs. It can affect men and women, and often it is spread through sexual contact.Studies conducted among women in the United States and the result showed that almost 70 percent of sexually active women become carriers of the virus in their lifetime.
However, most of the HPV cases do not have any symptoms. But some can cause genital warts in men and penis cancer, but this is extremely rare. A more significant effect is when the infection occurs frequently and continuously where 10% of infected women will experience changes in cervical tissue and thus can be turned to become cancer.

Because the infection does not have any symptoms and no effective test to be carried out to detect the HPV virus, regular pap smear alone is the only way to detect these problems early.
Pap smear test can detect changes in tissue at the base uterus, which may caused by the virus. This allows a further test is made and effective treatment can be given in the beginning stage.
A study conducted on men, found that most do not know that they are also playing an important role in cervical cancer incidence among women. Most men do not know that they are the HPV virus carrier and this germs can transfer to their spouse causing their spouse to eventually exposed to the risk of cervical cancer.
Men who become carriers of the virus do not have any symptoms and so far no effective way to detect the virus among men. In particular, HPV types 16 and 18 do not cause health problems in men but can cause cervical cancer if it affects the women. So far there is still no effective way to detect and treat this virus.
The best way to avoid this virus is to practice safe sex or stay loyal and avoid having sex with multiple partners. Those who have many sexual partners or their spouse has many sexual partners will have a very high risk of virus infection.
Recent developments in medical field gives hope to prevent this HPV virus infection from causing cervical cancer by vaccination. But the vaccine is only able to protect a person from getting HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for causing cervical cancer and HPV types 6 and 11 which cause warts on the genitals.
However HPV 16 and 18 are accounted for 70 percent of the cervical cancer incident caused by HPV and the rest will be caused by other HPV types which is not covered by the vaccine.
Furthermore, this vaccine is only effective against those who are not infected with the virus yet. Therefore it is proposed to use only for those who are still not yet engage in sexual activities and that women are between the ages of 9-26 years or do not have cervical tissue changes caused by the HPV virus.
A total of three doses of vaccine should be given within six months to provide protection for four years. Study shown this vaccine is very effective in preventing infection of HPV 16, 18, 6 and 11 and this indirectly reduce the risk of getting cervical cancer.
However, those who receive the vaccine will still need to undergo regular pap smear because many other risk factors associated with cervical cancer could not be prevented by vaccines, such as smoking, early exposure to sex, Chlamydia infection, use of oral contraceptives, first sexual intercourse at younger age and others.
Pap smear should be done by all women who have had sexual intercourse whether still active or not. This includes those who are separated from their partner or spouse that had passed away.
HPV infected women can sometimes take a long time to turn into cancer.
