Bleeding and Spotting During Pregnancy

Last Updated on Saturday, 22 October 2011 01:27 Written by Natural Health Team Saturday, 22 October 2011 01:27

Health about and

About 10% of all women experience some type of light bleeding during pregnancy. This bleeding, though, is not the same as getting your period. One of the most important things to do is to determine whether you’re spotting or bleeding since they are very different that can indicate totally different issues. So how is spotting different from bleeding? Spotting is very light bleeding, similar to what you may have at the beginning or end of your period. It can vary in color from pink to red to brown (like dried blood). For spotting during pregnancy you may need to use a panty liner but nothing more than that. If you find it to be a little heavier than that and you find yourself needing to use better protection, this would be considered pregnancy bleeding.

?

to start, you can never be too sure on what causes pregnancy bleeding so it’s always best to contact your doctor or midwife to be safe and get a professional opinion. Here are some of the most common causes:

Sex – More blood flows to your cervix during pregnancy, so it’s not unusual to notice spotting after intercourse. A cervical polyp (a benign growth on the cervix) can also cause spotting or bleeding after sex.

Pap Smear or Internal Exam – Many pregnant women experience spotting after a pap smear or internal exam for the same reasons – greater blood flow to the cervix or a cervical polyp. Your doctor will usually give you a heads up about this before leaving the doctors office.

Implantation Bleeding – Some say that bleeding may occur very early in pregnancy, possibly before you realize you’re pregnant. The fertilized egg burrowing into the wall of your uterus may cause this implantation bleeding, but no one knows for sure. This type of bleeding usually lasts a day or two.

Miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy – Spotting or bleeding, especially if accompanied by abdominal pain or cramping, can be an early sign of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.  An ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo implants outside the uterus, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. This can be life-threatening, which is one of the reasons it’s important to let your practitioner know immediately if you have bleeding or pain in your first trimester. If you have an ultrasound that shows a normal heartbeat between 7 and 11 weeks, your chances of continuing the pregnancy are greater than 90 percent.

Placental problems or premature labor – In the second or third trimester, bleeding or spotting can be a sign of a serious condition such as placenta previa, placental abruption, a late miscarriage (between 13 weeks and mid-pregnancy), or premature labor (which can happen between mid-pregnancy and 37 weeks). Placental abruption is when the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before or during labor. Only 1% of pregnant women have this problem, and it usually occurs during the last 12 weeks of pregnancy. Even first-trimester bleeding may be a sign of an underlying problem with the placenta. Research shows a link between early pregnancy bleeding and a greater chance of later complications, such as preterm delivery or placental abruption, especially if bleeding is heavy.

Preparing for Labor – If your cervix begins to dilate as your body prepares for labor you may pass your mucus plug. It may have a little blood, which is why it’s also referred to as “bloody show.” If you’ve made it to 37 weeks, then passing your mucus plug is totally normal. However, if there’s more than a tinge of blood, or you have any other spotting or bleeding, be sure to call your practitioner.

Infections – Spotting can also be caused by conditions unrelated to pregnancy, such as vaginal infections and bladder infections. The cervix also becomes very friable, which means it can bleed easily because of the increased blood flow. If you have intercourse, there can also be a small amount of bleeding. Sometimes there is a small polyp or lesion that might bleed more in early pregnancy. If you think you may have any type of infection be sure to contact your doctor immediately for proper treatment.

Rh-negative Blood Type – If you’re having pregnancy spotting or bleeding and your blood type is Rh-negative, you’ll need a shot of Rh immune globulin. However, if you know for sure that the baby’s father’s blood is also Rh-negative or if it’s clear that the bleeding is not coming from the uterus, you do not need the shot.

If you’re experiencing pregnancy bleeding or spotting call your doctor or midwife right away. Even if you think it’s something minor or if the bleeding seems to have stopped be sure to always keep your health-care professional informed every step of the way. What your health-care practitioner does next will depend on your individual situation. If you’re unable to get a hold of your doctor or midwife and the bleeding hasn’t stopped, be sure to go straight to the emergency room. You’ll probably need an evaluation, which may include a physical exam, an ultrasound, and blood tests, to make sure you and your baby are fine and to rule out any complications.

Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms: Week 3 of Pregnancy

Week 3 of Pregnancy – Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms

Welcome to your Guide to Pregnancy – Week 3.

If fertilization took place in week 2 (if your menstrual cycle is longer than 28 days, refer to our article for Week 2 for fertilization information) your baby is too tiny to even see without the use of a microscope.  Your baby at this point does not even resemble a human being but rather a cluster of cells that divide and grow at an astounding rate.  Don’t worry, your body is given 9 months to take that cluster of cells and form them into a tiny little human being – ahhh, the absolute miracle of life.

By the third week, you most likely will not even know if you are pregnant or not.  In most cases, even early pregnancy tests cannot detect a pregnancy – however, by mid to end of this week, it’s worth a shot to try a pregnancy test.  Although you may not know whether you’re not your little one exists, the growing ball of cells already contains its sets of chromosomes.

For the most part, women will not experience physical pregnancy symptoms yet.  However, some women may experience slight – due to the egg implanting in the uterus, others have expressed that they feel different, tired and may or may not have other slight physical changes.

As with the weeks leading up to now and continuing for many more, it is imperative that you continue to take care of yourself.  If you have not started already, start a prenatal vitamin, specifically with 400 mg of folic acid.  Continue to avoid alcohol, smoking, and drugs.  A healthy diet rich in high fiber foods, fruits and vegetables should be consumed daily as as regular exercise.

You probably will not notice any physical changes.  If you do, most of the early pregnancy symptoms are very similar to PMS and often go unnoticed.

Within the next week you will be able to take an early home pregnancy test.  If you get a false result and you have not missed your period yet…wait a few days and take another one.  Some pregnancy brands claim that they are able to detect pregnancy 5-7 days before your missed period, these test can but the accuracy goes down.  It is best to wait until you have missed your period for 99% accuracy.

There are several reasons you may get a positive pregnancy test and miss your period only get it in the next few weeks.  Unfortunately this is typically due to a miscarriage.  Many miscarriages happen before the woman has even confirmed that she is pregnant.  There are several kinds of miscarriages:

Threatened Miscarriage
Incomplete Miscarriage
Complete Miscarriage
Missed Miscarriage
Blighted Ovum
Ectopic Pregnancy
Molar Pregnancy

Most miscarriages occur within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.  Although a miscarriage may feel like a terrible loss, and it is, do know that the miscarriage happened because the pregnancy was not progressing in a fashion suitable to grow the baby.

If fertilization has occurred this week or last – congratulations.  Remember, if this wasn’t the month, there is always next!  The chore to conceive (sex) doesn’t have to be a chore at all.  Make making a baby fun for you and your spouse and don’t give up!

Information of Ovarian Cysts and Pregnancy

, together, is a condition experienced by many women. Ovarian cysts, in most cases, are harmless and pose no major threat to the pregnant woman. They do not hamper a normal pregnancy in any way and vanish on their own, with time. Before discussing ovarian cysts and pregnancy further, lets find out what are ovarian cysts.

Ovarian cysts are the benign cysts with thin walls, containing a harmless fluid. In most cases, these cysts go away on their own. Sometimes, however, the cysts may become very large or painful and might even break or rupture, leading to . The cysts may also sometimes be cancerous, leading to ovarian cancer, or they may obstruct the blood supply of the ovaries. In such scenarios, proper treatment is required to get rid of them, as they can pose a major threat to the woman.

Ovarian cysts pregnancy seldom produce any . That is why, most of the ovarian cysts are detected accidentally, pregnancy related examinations. However, a woman who has large cysts or has those that have ruptured, may experience similar symptoms of ovarian cysts and pregnancy, such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Thus, doctors, on detecting ovarian cysts, first of all, make sure that these symptoms experienced by the pregnant woman are pregnancy symptoms only, and are in no way related to ovarian cysts.

Complex ovarian cysts i.e overgrown cysts or ruptured cysts can be very dangerous for a pregnant woman’s health. Firstly, overgrown cysts i.e up to 8 cm in size, exert immense pressure on the bladder and the bowel of the pregnant woman. Secondly, cysts growing on stem, if bent, can cause intense pain to the pregnant woman. Sometimes, the ovarian cyst pain can be so acute that it may lead to a miscarriage or may induce an early labor in a pregnant woman. Both these conditions can pose a major health problem to the woman as as her unborn child.

The doctors, first of all, make sure that the ovarian cysts are benign and are not a threat to the pregnancy. For this, they conduct various tests including ultrasounds, to confirm that there are no cancerous cysts.

Doctors generally prescribe OTC medications, such as pain killers and anesthesia, for ovarian cyst pain relief. For ruptured ovarian cysts, surgical procedures such as cystectomy, which involve surgical removal of the cysts, is conducted in non-pregnant women. However, a woman with ruptured ovarian cysts, and pregnancy condition together, is recommended, not to go in for surgery as it might create some complications afterwards. However, if the cysts become very big i.e more than 8 cm, doctors remove the cysts using procedures such as laparoscopy, and in case of very big cysts, open incisions. Surgery during pregnancy is usually done in the second trimester.

Having chamomile tea can bring relief from the pain arising out of ovarian cysts. Hot compresses on the abdomen and the pelvic area can bring pain relief too. Pregnant women are recommended to include foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin B in their diet, to reduce the discomfort arising out of the ovarian cysts. Pain can also be reduced by eating parsley and tomatoes.

Ovarian cysts and pregnancy, together, is a harmless condition in about 95% of the cases. However, ovarian cysts can be dangerous too, if the cysts are found to be malignant. In such a case, either or all of surgeries such as oophorectomy, salpingectomy and hysterectomy are usually done, depending upon the growth of the cancer.
