Four Issues of Mental Healthcare Reform that Still Need Improvement

Last Updated on Monday, 10 October 2011 10:21 Written by Natural Health Team Monday, 10 October 2011 10:21

Information about of that Improvement

Healthcare reform is becoming a reality and the importance of and behavioral healthcare is receiving due notice. We find evidence of this achievement throughout the law – mental health and substance use services must be provided by all plans that participate in the new exchanges, and these benefits must be offered at parity. Healthcare home and Accountable Care Organization pilots must address substance use and mental health disorders. Additionally, the law includes a number of provisions specific to mental health and substance use, including authorization for new grants to co-locate services as well as new workforce development grants.

Even with all the progress that has been made, many areas of policy and payment need to be improved for the sector to fulfill its intended role in a reformed healthcare system. National and community mental health organizations around U.S. are committed to advancing the following issues:

1.) Extension of the temporary Federal Medicaid Assistance Percentage increase

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Congress provided a temporary increase to the Federal Medicaid Assistance Percentage to cash-strapped states meet their obligations. An extension of this provision is critical, given the combination of state revenue projections and Medicaid growth.

2.) Federal policy and payment equity for behavioral health organizations

In recognition of the healthcare access and use challenges confronting communities that are low income or have high rates of illness and few medical providers, Congress has enacted a number of policy and payment preferences for “safety net” providers, including enhanced reimbursement under Medicaid, federal funding to provide care to uninsured people, loan guarantees, and access to federally subsidized malpractice insurance. Unfortunately, the safety net does not offer equity. To correct this situation, mental health advocates are working with other national organizations to advance the notion of federally qualified behavioral health centers. This effort includes establishing national treatment and reporting standards for organizations that choose to obtain this designation as well as a proposed reimbursement model that more accurately reflects the costs of providing services.

3.) Healthcare information technology funding fix

For healthcare reform to be successful, all medical providers need to share information to better coordinate care, reduce inefficiencies, and improve client outcomes. Behavioral healthcare providers need access to federal funding for the meaningful use of (information technology). One solution is to extend Medicare and Medicaid facility payments to community mental health and addiction organizations as well as private and public psychiatric hospitals.

4.) Medicare parity implementation

In June 2008, Congress enacted payment parity in Medicare’s Part B benefit, which provides copayment equity for mental health and addiction services. Although this is an important step, much more needs to be done in Medicare for there to be true parity. First, the types of outpatient mental health interventions paid for by Medicare need to be extended to include, for example, case management, psychiatric rehabilitation, and other intensive community-based interventions. Medicare also must recognize mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists as independent practitioners.

The policy successes of the last few years would not have been possible without the active involvement of advocates of mental health – down to the individual level. Passage of healthcare reform is only the first of many steps necessary to improve the lives of people with addiction disorders and . National and community mental health organizations must continue to reply on the support and voice of the general public to bring this “unfinished business” to completion.

Information about Dad May But Won’t Ask For It; experts on families to dad’s and health

The new tie and golf balls are a nice gesture, but this Father’s Day dad might need a gift society has conditioned him not to ask for- This could mean a to do simple tasks dad can no longer manage or a to help dad socialize and relieve depression and loneliness. Recent studies show men don’t seek psychological and physical help as easily as women because our culture preaches to boys early on that asking for help is not masculine but rather a sign of weakness.

“We see many elderly men needing the most help but they are the last to ask for it,” says Peter Ross, CEO and founder of Senior Helpers, the nation’s fastest growing provider of in-home senior care. “An elderly man could be suffering from deep depression or a physical ailment, but he’s too proud to seek assistance.”

Just ask Mark Snider from Charlotte, North Carolina. His 83-year-old dad, Rod Snider, had symptoms of dementia for several months before he finally told his family he had a problem. Rod was having difficulty sleeping and was becoming forgetful. His family blamed old age.

Mark says his dad suddenly turned over his car keys and said, “Son I no longer feel I should drive.” Mark hired Senior Helpers for his dad, 24/7, to help him back to bed during the night so he would not accidentally fall, take his medicine on time, go for walks and even work with Scrabble pieces and math flash cards to keep his mind sharp. Rod died last month from an aggressive form of dementia, just months after he was officially diagnosed.

A 2008 study from the University of Cincinnati and the Medical University of South Carolina finds in the U.S. boys learn early on that The study calls the contrast between men’s and women’s help- seeking behavior a In the U.S., men die, on average, close to seven years younger than women and have higher rates of the 15 leading causes of death. A study by Clark University and Boston College says, A new national poll conducted by Senior Helpers found 70% if their elderly parents could not take care of themselves. Ross believes, ” children think of mom first because she’s more likely to ask for help while dad appears independent and in control.”

“The best way to get dad help is to offer it with an emphasis on problem solving rather than emotion,” adds Ross. “Since men are competitive and success oriented, the best way to approach Dad is to acknowledge the courage it takes to ask for and accept assistance and then point out why it is a good idea.”

Difficulty getting around. Falls are the leading cause of death and injury for Americans over age 65. Memory loss. It’s one thing to forget where the keys are. It’s another to forget if you took your medicine, left the stove on, if you forget the day or your location. Severe memory loss could be a sign of severe dementia. Change in appearance or behavior. Weight loss could indicate a senior is not eating properly. A lack of hygiene or unkempt appearance may be a sign of depression or the inability to perform the basic activities of daily living.

Pregnancy, Prenatals, Healthy Baby – What You Need to Know

Last Updated on Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:27 Written by Natural Health Team Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:27

Information about , , – What You Need to

Pregnancy is such a critical time. A woman’s body is drastically changing and the baby inside is creating new demands on the mother’s body. You want to do everything you can right to make sure that your baby is healthy and has a good start in life.

Some birth defects have been linked to the lack of vitamins and minerals. How do you pick the correct prenatal vitamins to ensure a healthy pregnancy? Should you just rely on your physician or should you know more? Should you take prenatals even after your pregnancy? We looked deeper into what a mother really needs to know before and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is such a critical time, and you want to do everything you can to provide the “just right” array of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Pregnancy and breastfeeding place tremendous demands on your body and can deplete omega-3 fatty acids. Target each stage of pregnancy with the perfect balance of nutrients.

have shown that moms who receive the recommended amount of DHA during pregnancy have babies with increased attention spans throughout the first two years of life. The benefits of taking omega-3 DHA before, during, and after pregnancy are truly amazing.

Remember, your baby will take what it needs first to develop and grow, and therefore, your body may suffer if you are not getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals needed throughout pregnancy.

Healthy Baby

Every vitamin, every mineral, every nutrient has an job to do now, for you and your growing baby. Your growing baby’s development depends on it. The right vitamins help build your baby’s bones and teeth and ensure your baby has a healthy start in life.

Eating a variety of healthy foods is important, but with hectic schedules, morning sickness, and the changing nutritional demands of your developing baby, it can be difficult to achieve the right nutritional balance. Nutrition is also critically important during recovery and while you are breastfeeding your newborn baby.

Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are packed full of nutrients that will help support and nourish your growing child and your body during pregnancy. How do you determine which prenatal vitamins are right for you? What do you look for in prenatal vitamins?

Prenatal vitamin are vitamin that a woman can take on a daily basis to ensure that she is obtaining appropriate quantities of essential nutrients during pregnancy. Prenatal nutrition is important but nausea and vomiting can cause women to miss meals and important nutrients from both a balanced diet and prenatal vitamin supplementation.

Just picking up some ordinary vitamins at the drugstore is not enough for a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins contain important nutrients in stronger dosages than regular multivitamin supplements (even those formulated for women). A good vitamin does not take the place of eating nutritiously but it can balance the scales in your favor, and your baby’s too. Researchers at the University of Maryland have noticed that many commonly prescribed prenatal vitamins do not dissolve well resulting in insufficient absorption of the nutrients.

The March of Dimes reports that birth defects of the spine, skull, and brain, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, are more likely to occur if the mother does not get sufficient folic acid during the first few weeks of her pregnancy – even before she knows she is pregnant.

Prenatal vitamins can reduce risk of childhood cancers and omega fish oil intake has been linked to higher IQ in offspring. New research from the Boston University School of Medicine is recommending higher intakes of vitamin D as so many are deficient. The women’s levels of vitamin D were related to the frequency of milk consumption and prenatal vitamin use.

Increased zinc and vitamin B6 levels can boost immunities needed after pregnancy and sufficient B6 has been shown to provide infant growth advantages. This B vitamin can prevent neural tube defects when taken early in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Zinc supports normal growth and development during pregnancy.

Calcium and magnesium supplementation are so important during pregnancy. A good prenatal vitamin should include folic acid and calcium, among other nutrients that are important to a healthy pregnancy and baby. In the last trimester of pregnancy, skeletal growth is highest and the fetus draws calcium directly from the mother’s stores. In addition, clinical trials have shown that adequate calcium during pregnancy lowers blood pressure and may reduce the incidence of premature births. Magnesium promotes the health of bones and may help maintain normal blood pressure and muscle comfort during pregnancy.

Folic acid is the most commonly prescribed prenatal supplement for the months prior to becoming pregnant as well and it is essential for the health and growth of the baby, especially for brain functions.

The female body’s requirement for vitamin C increases during pregnancy as this vitamin promotes the normal growth of the baby and supports building strong bones and teeth. It also supports the absorption of another key nutrient during pregnancy: iron.

Iron is recommended to prevent the mother suffering from anemia due to the demands that the baby puts on her iron consumption. Iron is an important mineral and is responsible for helping the mother and the baby’s blood to carry oxygen. Iron deficiencies can lead to severe birth defects for the baby.

Women have an increased requirement for biotin during pregnancy, and a biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50 percent of pregnant women. This deficiency may increase the risk of birth defects.

Adequate amounts of vitamin A help to promote the health of the baby by promoting normal growth and development of the embryo and fetus, and supporting genes that determine the sequential development of organs in embryonic development. Beta-carotene is a nutrient from plants that the body converts into vitamin A.

Prenatal vitamins can be taken after pregnancy to provide a well-balanced supplementation program. With a mother’s hectic schedule and lack of time, prenatal vitamins are a perfect choice for an after pregnancy supplement regimen.

The correct prenatals are essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Doing your research on prenatal vitamins can be very rewarding and time well spent to ensure an easy and successful pregnancy.

(((www.imjuicing.com))) My name is Chris and I have had diabetes for 17 years. As far as who I am, I am 27-years old, a father of three beautiful children, and I have the most amazing wife in the world Andrea. I have owned my own business for several years and I coach high school football in the state of Washington. With all this going on, I have come to the conclusion that enough is enough and it is time for a change in my health and in my life. I usually don’t “wear it on my sleeve” that I am a diabetic, because I never have wanted to bother others with it. I have taken fairly good care of my diabetes over the years, but I know that I can always do better and I need better control of my blood sugars. I know there are millions of diabetics out there that are looking for the answer, and I am hoping that this is it. Now I know that we probably won’t find a “cure” per se, but anything that will give me a decrease in my insulin usage, better control of my blood sugars, more energy, and a longer life, that is something worth pursuing. This is going to be a series that follows me on my iPhone as I go through a 60-day juice fast. This may not be your typical juice fast because I do “blended” fruits and veggies rather than “juiced.” Either way, I will be focusing on the fact that raw fruits and vegetables contain the micro-nutrients that we need to cure our bodies of all the sicknesses that we have and experience.
