The early stages of cervical cancer do not produce any signs and symptoms, thus, it remains undiagnosed in most cases. This is the reason why it is important to have regular check-ups in order to determine if there are any underlying medical conditions. In the later stages, cancer of the cervix can manifest symptoms such as bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, vaginal discharge tinged with blood, discomforts during intercourse, and smelly vaginal discharge.

There are different risk factors which can cause cancer of the cervix. Some of the risk factors include the human papilloma virus, smoking, multiple sex partners, weak immune system, genetic factors, multiple pregnancies, use of contraceptive pills, sexually transmitted diseases, and socio-economic status.

Managed Behavioral Health Care

Managed health care refers to the strategies used by many health plans to control costs of health care while ensuring quality of care and encouraging appropriate use of health care.  Managed behavioral health care applies the same principles and strategies to manage behavioral health care costs.  Behavioral health care includes treatment for mental health and substance abuse disorders.  Behavioral health is usually managed separately from medical care, and often involves different co-pays and benefit limits.  
Spending on Behavioral Health

Spending on mental health and substance abuse treatment in the US is expected to be $ 239 billion by 2014. It was $ 42 billion in 1986 and $ 121 billion in 2003. The rate of growth in spending on behavioral health will be slower than for all health care spending in the next decade and will account for a smaller share of total US health care spending of $ 3.5 trillion: from 9.7% in 1986 to 7.5% in 2003 and 6.9% in 2014.

The decreased rate of growth in spending on behavioral health care is due largely to the fact that behavioral health care spending will not be impacted by the drastic increases in spending associated with high cost technology that is driving overall health care spending. MRIs, brain scans and surgeries are not required to diagnose or treat behavioral health conditions.

The cost of prescription drugs for behavioral health conditions is a significant portion of behavioral health expense. Spending on prescription drugs is increasing at a faster rate than overall behavioral health spending. Consequently, spending on behavioral health will continue to grow at the same rate of 6.4% after 2003 as it did before 2003. Overall health spending will increase at a slower rate of 7.2% – down from the 8.0% increase prior to 2003. In 2014, 3 of 10, or 30% of behavioral health care dollars will be spent on prescription drugs, up from 23 % in 2003. The use of drug formularies has encouraged many people to switch to generic drugs to save on out of pocket expenses. This has helped slow cost increases for drugs.

Of the total amount of health care spending, 7-10% is for behavioral health. Of that portion, most of the behavioral health dollars appear to be spent on mental health rather than substance abuse treatment; 78% in 1986, 83% in 2003, and 85% is expected in 2014. Substance use disorders typically co-occur with mental health disorders, especially with mood and anxiety disorders, and providers typically code their billing using a primary diagnosis. Since insurance coverage is sometimes more generous for mental health than substance abuse, the mental health diagnosis is typically used as the primary diagnosis for billing purposes, rather than the substance abuse diagnosis. So the numbers are misleading in that regard. While there are differing trends in mental health and substance abuse spending, it is generally more helpful to consider the combined spending for mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Overall, managed behavioral health care has helped contain rising costs by shifting the level of care from more expensive inpatient hospital care to less costly outpatient care. These shifts have worked well for the majority of people with milder mental health conditions such as mild to moderate depression and anxiety. There is some concern that the most severely mentally ill, adults with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders, as well as children with severe disturbances may be experiencing some restricted access to the intensity of services they require as a result of managed care practices. Outpatient services are now more accessible, but more intensive services are not readily available. A small percentage of behavioral health consumers utilize a majority of the more costly and intensive behavioral health services. Most of these truly need the services. There are some who over utilize the services. Identifying those who over utilize and helping them learn to use services appropriately is a function of managing behavioral health care, as is recognizing when a person truly needs more intensive services and ensuring access to those services.

Engaging in sexual activity at an early age also seems to increase the risk of developing cancer of the cervix, possibly because immature cells are more vulnerable to cancerous changes triggered by the HPV virus.

Radiation may also be used as a form of treatment. The radiation can be applied externally to the cervix or it can be placed into the cervix internally. In advanced cervical cancer, radiation is usually combined with chemotherapy to enhance its effectiveness. Chemotherapy is a treatment that uses powerful drugs alone or in combination with each other to travel throughout your body to kill spreading cancer cells.

You may be able to prevent cervical cancer if you take steps to prevent becoming infected with the HPV virus. This means practicing safe sex by always using condoms. Young girls may want to consider receiving the HPV vaccine called Gardasil. It is being recommended for girls as a routine vaccination at 11 to 12 years of age before becoming sexually active. Other young women up to age 26 are advised to take the vaccine also.

Since early cervical cancer often has no symptoms, regular pap tests are important in order to detect the HPV virus and any pre-cancerous changes to cervical cells.

There are several types of tumors that may develop within different areas of the breast. Most tumors are the result of benign (non-cancerous) changes within the breast. For example, fibrocystic change is a non-cancerous condition in which women develop cysts (accumulated packets of fluid), fibrosis (formation of scar-like connective tissue), lumpiness, areas of thickening, tenderness, or breast pain.

Other factors that may make you more susceptible to breast cancer include : -

Age : – Your chances of developing breast cancer increase with age. Close to 80 percent of breast cancers occur in women older than age 50. In your 30s, you have a one in 233 chance of developing breast cancer. By age 85, your chance is one in eight.

A personal history of breast cancer : – If you’ve had breast cancer in one breast, you have an increased risk of developing cancer in the other breast.

Family history : – If you have a mother, sister or daughter with breast or ovarian cancer or both, or a male relative with breast cancer, you have a greater chance of also developing breast cancer

Genetic predisposition : – Between 5 percent and 10 percent of breast cancers are inherited.

Radiation exposure : – If you received radiation treatments to your chest as a child or young adult, you’re more likely to develop breast cancer later in life. Your risk is greatest if you received radiation as an adolescent during breast development.

Excess weight : – The relationship between excess weight and breast cancer is complex. In general, weighing more than is healthy increases your risk, particularly if you gained the weight as an adolescent. But risk is even greater if you put the weight on after menopause. Your risk also is greater if you have more body fat in the upper part of your body.

Early onset of menstrual cycles : – If you got your period at a young age, especially before age 12, you may have a greater likelihood of developing breast cancer. Experts attribute this risk to the early exposure of the breast tissue to estrogen.

Late menopause : – If you enter menopause after age 55, you’re more likely to develop breast cancer. Experts attribute this to the prolonged exposure of the breast tissue to estrogen…

Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain. In fact, when it first develops, breast cancer may cause no symptoms at all. But as the cancer grows, it can cause these changes: 

 A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit   A change in the size or shape of the breast  Discharge from the nipple  A change in the color or texture of the skin of the breast or areola (such as dimpling, puckering, or scaliness).

Screening Mammography : – A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast. This is the best test we have to screen women for breast cancer. A Screening Mammogram consists of two “pictures” of each breast. If an area on the mammogram looks suspicious or is not clear, additional mammograms with different views may be needed. Annual screening mammography is recommended for all women over 40 years old.

Diagnostic Mammography : -This is a mammogram used for problem-solving, rather than for screening. For instance, if a patient has a lump in her breast, a directed investigation of that area is performed. This is also done when a particular finding in the breast is being followed over time. A diagnostic mammogram is tailored to the patient’s case and is carefully monitored by a radiologist, who interprets the images and determines whether there is any need for further tests.

Ultrasonography : -Using high-frequency sound waves, ultrasonography can often show whether a lump is solid or filled with fluid. This exam may be used along with Diagnostic Mammography or MRI to answer questions about a specific area of the breast. Because it uses sound waves instead of X-Rays, ultrasound provides information that is different and often complementary to the mammogram.

Breast MRI : -Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to look specifically at the breast. Each exam produces hundreds of images of the breast, cross-sectional in all three directions (side-to-side, top-to-bottom, front-to-back), which are then read by a radiologist. It is non-invasive and no radioactivity is involved. The technique is believed to have no health hazards in general.

One way to find out if a breast lump or abnormal tissue is cancer is by having a biopsy. During a biopsy, a surgeon, a pathologist or a radiologist removes a portion or all of the suspicious tissue. The suspicious tissue is examined under a microscope by a pathologist who checks for cancer cells and makes the diagnosis. Needle (Wire) Localization Biopsy : – This type of biopsy involves the use of a needle and wire to locate the abnormal tissue and surgery to remove it. Needle localization is performed when you have an abnormality on a mammogram that cannot be felt. It is an outpatient biopsy that is done in two steps on the same day….
