Recent large-scale prospective randomized clinical research trials have not only failed to identify a cancer prevention role (beyond a balanced diet) for Vitamin E, Vitamin C, folate, and beta-carotene (a member of the Vitamin A family) supplements, but data from these trials have strongly suggested an increased of adverse health outcomes, at least in some sub-groups of patients, with supplements of several of these vitamins.

Alas, as is typically the case with public health studies, the clinical data regarding Vitamin D is not without inconsistency, and the data on Vitamin D and cancer incidence has not been uniformly positive, either. However, multiple recent epidemiological and prospective clinical research studies have at least suggested that low levels of Vitamin D in our bodies may, in fact, be associated with a higher risk of developing certain cancers (look for a more comprehensive review of the data on Vitamin D and cancer prevention in my forthcoming book, “A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race”). Moreover, decreased blood levels of Vitamin D also appear to be linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease as well.

Now, a newly published prospective clinical research trial suggests that decreased levels of Vitamin D in the blood appears to be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer recurrence, and death due to breast cancer, in previously diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. In this study, which has just been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, 512 with early-stage breast cancer, diagnosed between 1989 and 1996, were prospectively followed for an average of nearly 12 years. Blood was routinely collected from all following their diagnosis of breast cancer, as a part of this clinical research trial. The were then closely followed for recurrence of their breast cancer, and for death due to breast cancer and other causes.

As with other similar studies, a surprisingly large number of these otherwise healthy women were discovered to have decreased levels of Vitamin D in their blood. In 38 percent of these women, Vitamin D levels were significantly below normal levels, while another 39 percent of these women had mildly decreased levels of circulating Vitamin D. Among these 512 women, 116 experienced metastatic recurrence of their breast cancer during the course of this prospective clinical study, while 87 women died with evidence of recurrent breast cancer.

The results of this prospective clinical study were rather compelling. The 10-year survival rates for these women with early-stage breast cancer varied significantly according to the level of Vitamin D in their blood. Survival at 10 years following breast cancer diagnosis was 74 percent, 85 percent, and 85 percent for women with significantly deficient, mildly deficient, and normal Vitamin D levels, respectively. Based upon the analysis of all of the data from this study, breast cancer patients with a significant deficiency of Vitamin D were observed to be almost twice as likely (71 percent increased risk) to experience a recurrence of their breast cancer, and they were 60 percent more likely to die, when compared to the patients who had normal levels of Vitamin D in their blood.

Although this clinical study included relatively few patients, it does, nonetheless, raise the possibility that a significant deficiency of Vitamin D may be associated with a worse prognosis in patients with early-stage breast cancer. Another related finding in this study was that very low levels of Vitamin D also appeared to be associated with breast tumors with more aggressive features when examined under the microscope, which is consistent with other studies that have suggested a link between “high grade” breast tumors and decreased blood levels of Vitamin D. At the same time, as I have already mentioned, the available data regarding Vitamin D levels (and the use of Vitamin D supplements) has not been consistent, and other clinical studies have failed to identify a link between Vitamin D and breast cancer risk. There is also some experimental data available suggesting that very high levels of Vitamin D in the blood may also be associated with poorer outcomes in women with breast cancer (similar findings have also been reported for excessive Vitamin D levels and cardiovascular disease outcomes). Taken together, the data from these various studies strongly suggest that there may be a fairly narrow “optimal range” of Vitamin D levels in the blood that are associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer, a decreased risk of breast cancer recurrence (and death), and a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease; and that excessively high or low levels of this vitamin may have adverse health in these areas.

The next obvious step is to conduct larger prospective clinical research trials that secretly randomize patient volunteers to receive various doses of Vitamin D, versus placebo (sugar) pills. There are several such studies already underway (or about to start), involving both cancer patients and patients without cancers. However, it will likely take another 10 years for mature data to emerge from these ongoing studies. Meanwhile, my advice is to eat a healthy and well-balanced diet. If you are a breast or prostate or colorectal cancer survivor, or if you have one or more risk for these cancers (or for cardiovascular disease), then you may also want to ask your physician to measure the level of active Vitamin D in your blood. If you are significantly deficient in Vitamin D, then your physician might consider the possibility of Vitamin D supplementation in conjunction with careful serial monitoring of your Vitamin D levels.

A `stress` condition seems `relative` in nature. Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful. Stress, nonetheless, is synonymous with negative conditions. Today, with the rapid diversification of human activity, we come face to face with numerous causes of stress and the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

 

Stress has many different causes, some of which affect certain people more than others. Work is often cited as a primary cause of stress, especially among those who believe they are underpaid and underappreciated in their professional lives. Strained family relationships with spouses and children can also lead to stress. However, even seemingly insignificant problems such as long lines at the grocery store or rush hour traffic jams can increase stress levels in some people.

 

While removing oneself from stressful situations is ideal, this is not always the most practical solution to managing stress. Meditation, yoga, and other forms of relaxation therapy can be helpful in coping with stress. Changes that improve your overall health, such as eating a balanced diet and ensuring a good night’s sleep, can also help to boost your resistance to the negative of stress.

There are no specific explanations as to what causes women to have breast cancer. It usually occurs after they reached their 20s although some cases prove otherwise. The only treatment doctors recommend to prevent it is mammogram which will determine whether or not they have breast cancer. Breast cancer can be caused by few such as premature mentrual, late menopause, excessive smoking, drugs or alochol, family history or estrogen therapy.

According to papers, news and internet, breast cancer is a disease that specially targets women irregardless of their age. It is also regarded as the world’s second lethal killer after cancer. For every 10 women, 5 to 6 of them will have a high chance of breast cancer.

Breast cancer usually occurs after women reached their 20s although in some cases, there are teenagers or even children getting it. It is when part of the breast cells become mutated and start infecting the rest of the body. Every year, there are millions of women around the world suffering from breast cancer given their frequent medical checkup statistics provided by hospitals.

The most common procedure recommended by doctors is mammogram. Mammogram is a treatment meant to examine their breasts for any symptoms of cancer. Symptons such as mutation of cells within their breasts. An early detection will certainly help women to have their breast cancer cured faster. If not, doctors will recommend various ways for them to avoid breast cancer.

So what causes women to have breast cancer?

There are several possibilities pertaining to this. Such as:

1.    Women beginning their mentrual cycle too soon. The average age is 12. Yet some begin much earlier. Therefore their of getting breast cancer is much higher before they reach 30s.

2.    Women beginning their menopause cycle too late. The average age is 50 and earlier. But for those starting beyond 50, their bodies will start to have adverse reaction since their hormones change too late.

3.    Women eating foods with saturated fats and lacking nutrition. Lack of proper diet can also be a determining factor in them suffering from breast cancer. Without sufficient calcium and vitamins, their body loses the necessary resistance to sickness and becomes more prone to breakdown.

4.    Women smoking or taking drugs excessively. However awkward it may sound, they will be inviting all the unknown germs to attack and infect their body cells simply through frequent use of cigarettes, drugs or medicine which they think they know a lot but  really know nothing about.

5.    Women drinking beer, cocktails, wine and other alcohol- drinks excessively. This can have the most direct impact other than smoking or being addicted to drugs although there is no direct proof yet. Especially those who are say in nightclubs or entertainment circle since they have to entertain clients from time to time. Depending on their body conditions, not all of them have great tolerance in drinking.

6.    Women with family history of breast cancer. If their sisters, mothers or grandmothers have breast cancer, there is a high possibility of them getting it too.

7.    Women undergoing estrogen replacement therapy for various reasons. If they have been doing this for 10 years and more, the chances of them getting breast cancer are very high.

Whichever the possibility, breast cancer should not be taken lightly. An early checkup, consultation and detection from doctors will certainly help to manage or better still, avoid breast cancer. Failure to do so will result in development and infection of cancer to the rest of the body cells and by the time the woman fall sick and sees doctor, it could be late. As to how to avoid and manage breast cancer, I will be covering more on that in my next article.

-Fixation to skin or underlying muscle.

-Tumor tenderness and palpable axillary nodes.

-Sores on the nipple and areola (the small ring of color around the center of the nipple)
