Men rarely wash their hands after leaving the bathroom

Washing hands is one of the simplest and most effective way to avoid various kinds of infectious diseases are like influenza or diarrhea. Several recent studies show men apparently rarely do hand washing.

The team of natural health researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine conducted a study of nearly 200,000 people who were monitored using electronic sensors to be placed in the existing bathroom along the highway in the UK.

Researchers have only a third (30 percent) of the total number of men who wash their hands after using the bathroom. While the number of women, was found about 64 percent of the women did wash their hands. The results of this study have been reported in the American Journal of Public Health Care Information.

Various messages appear in the bathroom used to determine the best way to motivate people to wash their hands, like “Water does not kill germs, but the soap can” and “Always use soap to clean the dirty” was not very effective. But if the message written is “Is the person next to you wash your hands with soap?”, This message is helpful to increase hand washing with soap campaign.

This shows that most people will respond to something when the person is thinking there is someone else who watched her, which means masih lack of public awareness to wash hands with soap after using the bathroom.

“Women tend to respond to everything that is easy to remember, whereas men will respond best if it involves something that can be embarrassing,” said one researcher, as quoted from the Washington Post.

The findings were published to coincide with a day of washing hands with soap and worldwide on October 15, which aims to increase public awareness for hand washing. This activity is essential to help combat outbreaks of influenza and reduce the spread of diseases that are transmitted by germs such as diarrhea or other diseases.
