Sinus infection is a serious disease. Many people who consider it trivial disease. Whereas in America, every year 31 million people are affected by sinus infections. Recognize the causes and how to prevent it.

Sinus infection known as rhinosinusitis. As many as 14 percent of American adults affected by rhinosinusitis each year and as many as 91.2 million people had to go to the hospital.

As quoted from the Health’s health care information, sinus infections can cause several symptoms such as nasal voice, persistent cough and fever. In more serious cases, polyps can grow. Their study, published in The American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, found that sinus infection experienced by women more than men.

Most of the causes is the existence of bacteria that grow in the sinuses, which is in the back of the nose, eyes, and cheekbones. Sinus itself is an empty cavity in the skull bones (the area around the nose), which contains air.

The cold air will exacerbate infections and allergies because it causes mucous membranes in the sinuses to swell. It makes snot blocked and trapped in it, which then makes the bacteria grow in the area. Consequently, pain in the head and face would be felt.

According to a health care survey, as many as 73 million people in the United States limited their activities because of this disease. Antibiotics may be able to eliminate sinus infections by bacteria, but if the attack is a virus, antibiotics will be useless.

However, a recent natural health study published in the journal of the American Medical Association, antibiotics proved ineffective and not known about the target. Experts also recommend other approaches such as using ibuprofen or inhaling steam containing salt.

Symptoms that commonly occur in patients with include headache (usually when they woke up), snot is yellow or greenish, smelly breath, coughing mucus, high fever (above 39 Celsius), toothache, and less sensitive to the taste and smell.

Those at risk are those who frequent sinus colds, respiratory infections by bacteria or a virus, a broken nose, the existence of polyps in the nose. Other factors such as smoking, pollution of water, the use of decongestant medications (drugs eliminate clogged nose), cold air, divers, aviators and swimming in contaminated water.
