Health Information about Low for a

For those who are told their cholesterol is too high and they need to reduce it the first step that they will need to take is making dietary changes. There is nothing difficult about doing this, it is just a matter of having the mindset that a change needs to be made to improve ones health and this will start with a diet consisting of low cholesterol foods.

Although you will lose weight on this type of diet it is not like other weight loss diets.  The foods you eat and how they are prepared will determine how well you do on it, weight loss will simply be a healthy side benefit. Without a cholesterol reducing diet the chances of high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke increase when everyday levels remain high in the blood stream.

While there are many cholesterol lowering diets in books and on the internet they all work off the same basic principle; cut the foods that are high in cholesterol, saturated fates, and trans fats. Here’s the most important thing to remember; cutting cholesterol is much more then avoiding high cholesterol foods.

In study after study it has been proven that the most dangerous foods when it comes to cholesterol are saturated and trans fats. The reason for this is that dietary cholesterol does not necessarily translate to increased levels in the blood stream, but eating large amounts of these two fats is proven to raise blood cholesterol levels to dangerous levels.

Here’s an example: Shrimp are high in cholesterol, but eaten in moderation they have little affect on blood cholesterol levels. Take those same shrimp, roll them in batter and bread crumbs then deep fry them in oil. Most oils used to fry food are high in either saturated or trans fats and those same shrimp that had little to no affect are now cholesterol raising time bombs.

Probably the most important thing to do when shopping for food as part of a low cholesterol diet is learning to read labels. Pay particular attention to saturated fats and trans fats and the amounts in the food products you buy.

Foods high in fiber are also a good choice when it comes to lowering cholesterol levels. All those foods that your mom always told you to eat? Eat them. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains are all good healthy foods that will keep you healthy and fit simply because they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

One thing that may help before you ever go to the grocery store is find lists of low fat and low cholesterol foods either in healthy diet books or online in the multitude of health focused websites. Knowing what to buy before you go shopping can make it much easier to avoid those foods that are bad for your health making shopping for low cholesterol food a much more pleasant and easy experience.
